The Manchester Guardian (forerunner of The Guardian) noted a persistent vein of cynicism which is apt to repel, though the cynicism is not deep-seated. He was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature in 16 different years.įorster’s first novel, Where Angels Fear to Tread, was described by reviewers as astonishing and brilliantly original. The last brought him his greatest success. Many of his novels examined class difference and hypocrisy, including A Room with a View (1908), Howards End (1910) and A Passage to India (1924).
